Examples of Famous International Lawyers and Judges

Abraham Lincoln

Why not start off the list of famous international lawyers with Abraham Lincoln, one of the greatest presidents of the United States of America? Lincoln initially worked as a postmaster and a county surveyor, and later decided to become a lawyer as a result of his voracious reading. Instead of enrolling into an institution or becoming the pupil of an already established attorney, as was the custom at the time, he borrowed and purchased books and studied law on his own. He was admitted into the Illinois bar and became a formidable trial combatant during cross-examinations and closing arguments.

In court, Lincoln mainly handled transportation cases involving river barge conflicts and railroad bridges. His largest client was the Illinois Central Railroad and Lincoln has appeared before the Illinois Supreme court in 175 cases. He is also known for using science and geography in advocating.

Barack Obama

Another of the famous international lawyers, who is also a world leader is Barack Obama, the former president of the United States of America. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University, Obama enrolled in the Harvard Law School. He has worked as an associate in different law firms, and as a lecturer in the Chicago law school for 12 years. He then joined a law firm that specialized in economic development and civil rights litigation. The Class Action Lawsuit is one of the famous cases that he has fought on. Obama’s license of legal practice became invalid in the year 2007, as a part of his decision of running for president in the following year.

Shirin Ebadi

Shirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer and a human rights activist. She is also a Nobel peace prize laureate of the year 2003. She studied in the law department of the University of Tehran and passed the qualification exam to become a judge. She was the first female judge in Iran and the first woman to become president of the Tehran city court. She is one of the famous international lawyers known for taking up pro bono cases to give fair treatment to those who have fallen prey to the corrupted judiciary.

Ebadi was part of the team that drafted the law against the physical abuse of children in Iran, which the government passed in the year 2002. She has appeared in court for Dariush Forouhar, a politician found murdered at his home, Ezzad Ebrahim-Nejad who was killed in the Iranian student protests, and Arian Golshani, abused and beaten to death by her father and stepbrother.

Amal Clooney

Amal Clooney is a Lebanese-British Barrister, probably one of the most famous international lawyers of recent times. She specializes in International law and human rights. She has a BA degree in Jurisprudence from St. Hugh’s College, Oxford as well as an LLM degree from New York University School of Law. Practicing in both the US and the UK, as well as the International Court of Justice, Clooney has appeared for cases regarding the Armenian genocide, Wikileaks and Nadia Murad. She was made the special envoy on media freedom by the Foreign and Commonwealth office of the United Kingdom.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a lawyer who belonged to the United States of America who served as an associate judge of the Supreme court of the United States from the year 1993 until her death in the year 2020. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Cornell University, she enrolled in Harvard Law School. She is the first woman to be on two major law reviews, the Harvard law review, and the Columbia law review.

She worked for gender equality and women’s rights and has worked as a teacher in both Rutgers Law school and Columbia Law School. She was also a prolific writer. She has advocated for the American Civil Liberties Union and has had a voice in various national-level legal struggles in America such as those concerning native Americans, voting rights and affirmative action, abortion rights, searches and seizures, gender discrimination, etc. She has been at the top of the list of famous international lawyers all through her career.
