Raj Subramaniam, an Indian-American, will be the new CEO of FedEx, the world’s largest express shipping corporation. He has over 30 years of worldwide strategy and operational experience and has guided the company through a period of unprecedented growth. 

Frederick W Smith was previously the CEO of the worldwide courier delivery company. On June 1, Smith, the company’s chairman and CEO, will resign. He will now serve as the company’s executive chairman.

Quick Fact: FedEx, which Smith created in 1971, is one of the most well-known companies in the United States.

Piyush Goyal officially opens the Indian Jewellery Exposition Centre in Dubai.

During his visit to Dubai to participate in the India Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal inaugurated the Indian Jewellery Exposition Centre (IJEX) building. 

During the launch of IJEX, the minister urged the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPCexport )’s members to aim for a USD 100 billion annual export target, up from the current USD 35 billion. 

Quick Fact: IJEX will be a one-stop shop for international buyers looking for Indian jewellery in Dubai, and the platform will allow GJEPC members to display their wares and place orders all year.

Appointments 

Renu Singh, an IFS officer, has been named director of the Forest Research Institute (FRI).

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF) has named Dr Renu Singh as the new director of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun. 

She will be only the second woman to lead the institute. After AS Rawat, director-general of ICFRE, turned over his additional role of director FRI to her, Singh joined as FRI director.

For the first time since 1986, Canada has qualified for the FIFA World Cup.

For the first time in 36 years, Canada has qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup after defeating Jamaica 4-0 in Toronto. For the first time since Mexico in 1986, the North American nation has qualified for the finals. 

Canada has qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986, finishing first in the CONCACAF qualification group. 

Quick Fact: Canada is the 20th country to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18 and will include 32 nations competing for the title.

The Reserve Bank of India has unveiled a framework for geo-tagging payment system touch points.

The framework for geo-tagging payment system touchpoints has been released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The framework is part of the central bank’s focus on developing digital payments and ensuring that all citizens of the country have access to them. 

Payment system touchpoints will be geo-tagged, allowing for proper monitoring of payment acceptance infrastructure such as Points of Sale (PoS) terminals, Quick Response (QR) codes, and so on.

Physical infrastructure for digital payment transactions carried out by clients utilising payment touch points can be divided into several kinds. 

To begin with, banking infrastructure includes bank branches, offices, extension counters, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) / Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs), Cash Recycler Machines (CRMs), and micro-ATMs used by Business Correspondents (BCs), among other things. 

Second, payment acceptance infrastructure such Points of Sale (PoS) terminals, Quick Response (QR) codes used by banks and non-bank Payment System Operators (PSOs), and so on.
