Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo(SMART) successfully flight tested

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted the successful flight-testing of the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART).

The flight was successfully tested from the Wheeler Island from the coast of Odisha.

The launch is significant to establish the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the India.

The Missile has a  range of 650km and has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories including RCI Hyderabad, DRDL, NSTL Vishakhapatnam, ADRDE Agra.  
Quick Fact: An anti-submarine warfare missile is a standoff anti-submarine weapon which is a variant of anti-ship missile.

PV-EDGE 2020 organised by NITI Ayog, Renewable Ministry and Invest India

NITI Aayog, The New and Renewable Energy Ministry, and Invest India organise a global symposium ‘India PV EDGE 2020’.

The symposium was organised virtually.

The summit was organised in order to catalyse cutting-edge solar cell manufacturing in India.

India is a founding member of the International Solar Alliance

World Habitat Day- October 5

World Habitat Day was celebrated this year on October 5th.

It is celebrated on 1st monday of October every year.

It was first declared in 1985 by United Nations General Assembly.

The day is celebrated  with the aim to recognise the basic right of all humanity to have an adequate shelter and to encourage grassroots action in order to end poverty housing.

Visnu Shivaraj Pandian won the International Online Shooting Championship

Visnu Shivaraj Pandian won the 10m air rifle event at the International Online Shooting Championship.

Visnu shot 251.4 to win the title by a margin of two points.

The second place was won by Etienne Germond of France.

Shooters from 15 countries participated in the two-day competition.

Quick Fact: This was the 5th edition of the International Online Shooting Championship.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 announced

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 was jointly awarded to Harvey J. Alter(America), Charles M. Rice (America) and Michael Houghton (Britain).

They were awarded for the discovery of the Hepatitis C virus.

The announcement was made by the head of the Nobel Committee, Thomas Perlmann at Stockholm.
Quick Fact: The prestigious Nobel Prize comes with a gold medal and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1,118,000), courtesy of a bequest left 124 years ago by the prize creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.

World Teachers’ Day- 5th October

World Teachers’ Day is observed globally on 5th October.

The day aims to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target.

World Teachers’ Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

It was first celebrated in 1994.
Quick Fact: Theme for World Teachers Day 2020 is “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”.

Right Livelihood Award 2020 announced

Right Livelihood Awards 2020 were announced by the Right Livelihood Award Foundation.

The award for 2020 was shared among Ales Bialiatski of Belarus, Nasrin Sotoudeh of Iran, Bryan Stevenson of the United States(US) and Lottie Cunningham Wren of Nicaragua.

These activists were awarded for their contribution towards equality, democracy, justice and freedom.

The Right Livelihood Award honours and supports those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today.
Quick Fact: The award was established in 1980 by German-Swedish philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull and is also known as the alternative Nobel Prize in Stockholm.

World Space Week-04-10 October

World Space Week (WSW) is observed every year from October 4 to 10.

The week aims to celebrate science and technology, and their contribution towards the betterment of the human condition.

WSW was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 6, 1999.

The commencement date marks the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on 4 October 1957.

Quick Fact: The theme for WSW 2020 is “Satellites Improve Life.”
