Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020

The 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna.

The Nobel was awarded to them for the development of a method for genome editing.

Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna have discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden.

World Cotton Day: 07 October

World Cotton Day (WCD) is observed worldwide on 7th October.

The day aims to celebrate the advantages of cotton, from its qualities as a natural fibre to the benefits people obtain from its production, transformation, trade and consumption.

The day was inaugurated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2019.

WCD Day was initiated by the Group of Cotton-4 to the reflect the importance of cotton as a global commodity.
Quick Fact: Cotton-4 countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali.

Indian-built Sittwe port in Myanmar to start operations in 2021

India and Myanmar are working together towards the operationalization of the Sittwe port in the first quarter of 2021. 

Sittwe Port is a deepwater port constructed by India in 2016 at Sittwe, on the Bay of Bengal.

The port will connect India’s landlocked northeastern region with the Bay of Bengal through Mizoram.

The port is part of the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project which is being viewed as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia.
Quick Fact: Sittwe is the capital of Rakhine State in Myanmar. on the Bay of Bengal.

Launch of Vigraha- An Offshore Patrol Vessel of Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard have  launched a 98-metre offshore patrol vessel ‘Vigraha’.

The vessel was launched at a private shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai.

The vessel is 98-m long and has a displacement of 2100 tons.

The vessel would serve the East Region, from Visakhapatnam and would be operated under the leadership of IG S.Paramesh.
Quick Fact: The vessels have been built and designed by Larsen and Toubro Shipbuilding under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

My Ganga My Dolphin Campaign launched

My Ganga My Dolphin campaign was launched on October 5.

The launch took place on the occasion of Ganga River Dolphin Day.

The campaign was launched by the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Wildlife Institute of India and the Forest Department.

The campaign aims to promote sustainable tourism.
Quick Fact: Ganga River Dolphin day is celebrated because, on October 5 Dolphins were declared as National Aquatic Animals.

IFFCO and Prasar Bharati sign MoU to promote Agricultural Innovations

Prasar Bharati and Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to broadcast and promote new agriculture technology and innovations.

As per the Memorandum, DD Kisan will now broadcast innovative techniques that is being adopted in the agricultural field in an easy language.

DD Kisan will also run a 30 minutes program series to benefit the farmers.

MA Ganapathy appointed as DG of BCAS

Senior IPS officer, M A Ganapathy was appointed as the Director-General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS),

The post of BCAS chief had been vacant after Rakesh Asthana, who was appointed as the Director-General of Border Security Force.

MA Ganapathy will continue his tenure up to his superannuation on February 29, 2024. 

Quick Fact: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security was founded in 1978.

8.Person in News

Dinesh Kumar Khara appointed as the new Chairman of SBI

The government of India has appointed Dinesh Kumar Khara as the new Chairman of State Bank of India.

He has been appointed for a period of three years.

The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) had recommended Khara for the post of Chairman of SBI on August 28.

He will replace Rajnish Kumar as the SBI director.
Quick Fact: SBI was founded on 1st July 1955 and has its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
