Updated for 2026
March is the dreaded month of the heat and school exams! But it is also dense with internationally recognised days — many of them health, environment, and rights-focused. For entrance exam GK sections, the environmental observances (Water Day, Forestry Day, Meteorological Day) and the social awareness days (Women’s Day, Happiness Day) are the ones that appear most often.

8 March — International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s, with the UN formally recognising it in 1975. The day celebrates women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while calling for gender equality. A different theme is chosen each year.
(The UN Women — 1975 connection and the annual theme are the most common exam angles.)
14 March — International Day of Mathematics (Pi Day)
14 March (3/14 in month/day format) represents Pi (π ≈ 3.14). UNESCO proclaimed it the International Day of Mathematics in 2019. The day also marks Albert Einstein’s birthday (born 14 March 1879).

(This one started in India — a useful fact for exam questions.)
21 March — World Forestry Day (International Day of Forests)
Introduced at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture in 1971, this day raises awareness about the importance of forests to life on Earth. The UN General Assembly designated 21 March in 2012.

Observed on 21 March (21/3) to signify the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. The date itself is a clever reference to the condition — Trisomy 21.
22 March — World Water Day
World Water Day has been observed since 1993 (designated by the UN General Assembly in 1992). It promotes awareness about freshwater resources and sustainable water management. A new theme is chosen each year.

On 23 March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru were executed by the British in Lahore Jail. This Shaheed Diwas specifically honours these three revolutionaries — don’t confuse it with the 30 January Martyrs’ Day (which marks Gandhi’s assassination).
24 March — World Tuberculosis Day
World Tuberculosis Day marks the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB. WHO leads the global campaign with a different theme each year.
