Sonam Tshering Lepcha won the Padmashri for his contribution in the field of folk music.
He belonged to Kalimpng, West Bengal.
Although he was a soldier, he later travelled within Sikkim to compile a wide range of Indian folk and traditional Lepcha songs and played folk music on All India Radio in 1960
