Prepositions

Prepositions tell us where or when something is, in relation to something else. Consider the following example:

Ram stood behind Sita.

Here, the preposition behind tells us the position of Ram, with respect to Sita. Ram and Sita are the two nouns here.

Types of Prepositions

Preposition of Place

Prepositions such as in and at are used to indicate where something or somebody is, the place where they exist. Few examples are given below:

  • The pen is in the pouch.
  • Ravi is at the bus stop.

Preposition of Time

The major prepositions of time are at, on, in, by, since, etc. The rules regarding the use of these are given below:

  • At is used to indicate the time of the day. An example is given below:

He came to the office at 10 in the morning.

  • On is used to indicate dates and days. An example is given below:

I will see you on Sunday.

  • In is used to indicate months, seasons, years and parts of the day. An example is given below:

Ravi joined the army in May.

  • By is used to indicate a point of time. An example is given below:

I will return by 6 O’clock.

  • Since is used to indicate present tenses, for an action that is continued. An example is given below:

I have worked here since 2012.

Preposition of direction

The preposition to is used to indicate direction. Given below are a few examples:

  • The Taj Mahal is to your left.
  • North is to the East of West.

Preposition of Space

The prepositions above, below, under, over, behind, in front of, etc. are used to indicate the space in which something or someone exists in relation to another. Given below are a few examples:

  • The cat is under the table.
  • Rama stood in front of the line.
  • The cat is under the table.
